Gregory to the Empress Constantina.

Almighty God, who holds your devout heart in His right hand, both protects us through you and stores up for you eternal rewards in return for your earthly deeds. I have learned from the letters of my representative, the deacon Sabinianus, how justly Your Serenity has taken up the cause of the blessed Prince of the Apostles, Peter, against certain persons who are proudly humble and deceptively kind. I trust in the goodness of our Redeemer that for these good offices with the most serene Emperor and his most devout sons, you will receive your reward in the heavenly kingdom as well. There can be no doubt that eternal blessings await you, and that you will be freed from the chains of your sins, if you have made a debtor of the one to whom the power of binding and loosing was given.

I beg you, then: do not let any man's hypocrisy prevail against the truth. There are those who, as the great Apostle says, "by smooth talk and flattery deceive the hearts of the innocent" -- men who wear humble garments but are puffed up in their hearts. They make a great show of despising everything in this world while in fact reaching for everything this world has to offer. They publicly declare themselves unworthy, yet they cannot be content with ordinary titles because they covet the one distinction that would make them appear greater than everyone else.

Let Your Piety, whom Almighty God has set with our most serene Emperor over the whole world, serve Him from whom you received the right to such great authority. You will rule the world entrusted to you all the more securely the more faithfully you serve the Author of all things in the cause of truth.

I should also inform you that I have received a letter from the most devout Emperor asking me to be at peace with my brother and fellow bishop John of Constantinople. I wish to be at peace with everyone -- and I am. But when John, in his arrogance, assumes the new and unprecedented title of Universal Bishop, effectively reducing every other bishop to nothing, I must speak out. It is not my personal dignity at stake but the dignity of the entire episcopate. If one man can be Universal Bishop, then the name of bishop is taken from all the rest. But God forbid that should happen. I am ready for peace at any moment -- the instant John abandons this rash title.

I commend the cause to your protection. As you have championed the rights of the blessed Peter so far, continue to do so. For in defending his honor, you defend the unity of the Church itself.

While on the one hand it is a joy to us to learn that our brethren are solicitous about their children in fatherly charity, on the other we count it no less a matter for sadness when neither regard for other brethren nor consideration of their priestly office avails to restrain them from unlawful doings. How serious, then, and how harsh is the c...
