Since Fuscus, bishop of the Church of Capua, who was stationed here, has departed from this life, it has been our concern to delegate solemnly the visitation of the bereaved Church to our brother and fellow bishop Gaudentius, bishop of the city of Nola, to whom we have given it in charge that he should suffer nothing to be usurped by anyone in the matter of the promotions of the clergy, the revenue, the ornaments, and the ministries. It is fitting that you obey his constant exhortations, so that you ought to persist with vigilant care in ecclesiastical service and in the praises of God, and to order your conduct under the worthy discipline of ecclesiastical governance. And let none of you dare to go against his instructions, but in all things [you ought] to show obedience to his provisions, both in ecclesiastical observance and likewise in the safekeeping of your Church, so that, while your obedience is lent to his governance, and the welfare of your Church is in nothing neglected, his care [for it] may be the more attentive.
