TO ANTHEMIUS THE SUBDEACON. That he should inquire about the remainder of the money for building a fortress in the keeping of Benenatus, and that it be expended on that very thing out of all care. Gregory to Anthemius the subdeacon. It has come to us that Benenatus, formerly bishop of Misenum, received gold pieces [solidi] for the building of a fortress there. And because part of those gold pieces is said to have remained with him, let your experience inquire by subtle investigation; and if you learn clearly that any of those gold pieces remained, let him hand it over to the steward [comitatio] of the count [comes] of the aforesaid city under a page of receipt, and let it be your urgent concern that, with God's help, they be applied to the construction of that same place, just as they were given, since no reason permits that what is known to have been given for the common benefit be applied to anyone's own uses.
