You write that reverence for me flourishes among all. I rejoice at testimony of this kind, but I declare that it comes about through your efforts that my reputation thrives in such a way. You are for me the author of this favorable report, and I perceive that it is not by this favor alone that I am left empty-handed [i.e. not unrewarded]. For that other matter too, which under your patronage advanced to the benefit of my kinsmen, although it was granted to justice, is nevertheless credited to your account. I refrain from going on at greater length, because in repaying benefits an exchange of words is a meager thing. At the same time my cares clamor against me, cares which the slender sustenance of an impoverished homeland sets against my domestic duties.
