To Anysius.

Nothing could benefit Pentapolis more than honoring the Unnigardae [a barbarian military unit], who are excellent both as men and as soldiers, above all the other troops — not just the so-called native forces, but every auxiliary unit that has ever been stationed in our region.

The proof of their quality is their conduct. While other troops plundered the people they were supposed to protect, the Unnigardae fought the actual enemy. They deserve our respect and our support. Treat them well, and they will continue to defend us. Mistreat them, and we lose the only effective military force we have.

[The letter continues with detailed military recommendations for the defense of Pentapolis — remarkable evidence of a philosopher-bishop forced by circumstances into the role of military strategist.]
