When our common lord had departed from the city of Milan, the only solaces that remained to me for consolation were those of letters, because, while my conversation is directed toward you, some image of your presence flatters my longings. And this I beg of you, my lords, that you do it often, since we consider that your absence can be endured by this constancy alone. Let the most fortunate have the presence they have prayed for; for me, as I ponder my own faults, the care of letter-writing will suffice. My lord, while wishing you most abundant health, I pray that you may by no means cease to pour out prayers for me through the saints of God, and to render thanks to the Lord, whose benefits toward me are bestowed even beyond hope.
