To Anatolius the deacon. [Heading:] That favor be shown to those who have returned from the Istrian schism to the unity of the Church. Gregory to Anatolius, deacon of Constantinople. The bearers of the present letter, who by God's mercy have returned from the schism of the Istrians [the Istrian schism over the Three Chapters] to the unity of the Church, make many complaints about the wickedness of the bishops who are in those parts. And since for that reason they are hastening to Constantinople and ask that your support should be present to them, we exhort your Charity [the deacon, addressed by his honorable title] by these present words, that you ought to comfort them and assist them in a fitting manner; so that, with your help, they may both be wearied there the less, and may more easily be able to obtain what is just.
