Letter 12010: The heirs of Isidorus committed to build a hospice [xenodochium — a house for the care of pilgrims and the poor].

To Fantinus the defensor [a representative of the Roman church]. That he should press Isidore's heirs to build the xenodochium [hospice for strangers and the poor], or, if it is already built, that they should hand over the legacy. Gregory to Fantinus the defensor. Those things which a pious will's intention directs to be done, so that they may attain to their accomplishment, ought to receive a priestly concern. Accordingly we instruct your Experience [your good office] that you ought constantly and more vigorously to press upon the heirs of Isidore, a man of illustrious memory, so that the xenodochium which he established to be built in the city of Panormus [Palermo] they may hasten to complete without any difficulty, according to those things which have been arranged, lest, if they should think this to be neglected any longer, they incur both our wrath and God's, coming from the laws, which those who put off fulfilling a disposition of this kind deserve. But if the amount assigned in their xenodochium, which is to be built, seems perhaps unable to suffice, let the place in which the xenodochium itself was to have been established, or whatever has been left there, be applied to the xenodochium of Saint Theodore, which in the aforesaid city was once founded by Peter, so that both the heirs may be relieved of the solicitude and labor of building the xenodochium, and the will of the deceased may wholesomely take effect, since, even if in another place, yet whatever was assigned by the testator is paid out to the matter itself. Therefore let your Experience so bear the solicitude, that one of the two ought to be done without any delay.
