Letter 9178: I need to give you instructions about the case of Maximus, bishop of Salona.

The more you see that necessary matters are being entrusted to you by us, the more strenuous and solicitous you ought to show yourself. Accordingly, if Maximus of Salona, by the oath he has taken, confirms that he is not bound by simony or by heresy, and, having been questioned concerning the other matters before the body of Saint Apollinaris, answers only that he is innocent, and performs penance for his disobedience, as we have appointed, it is our will that your Experience [the addressee's official title] should deliver to him, for his consolation, the letter which we have written to him, in which we have indicated that we have restored to him both our favor and our communion; for, just as it befits us to be severe toward those persisting in contumacy, so again we ought not to deny a place for pardon to the humbled and penitent. Furthermore, concerning our brother Sabinianus, bishop of Iadera [Zadar], and Honoratus, archdeacon of Salona, and the others who have betaken themselves to the Apostolic See, the matter must be dealt with by all means diligently together with the same Maximus, so that he may receive them with the charity that is fitting, and may by no means retain in his heart any grievance against them, but may live with them in pure favor and sincere affection.
